The Consistency Rule Explained

Why Prop Firms Enforce the Consistency Rule (And How to Protect Your Payout)

In the modern proprietary trading firm ecosystem, the Consistency Rule has become one of the most controversial yet prevalent compliance mechanisms. Designed primarily to filter out high-leverage news gamblers, the rule mandates that no single trading day can represent more than a specific percentage (typically 30%, 33%, 40%, or 50%) of your total profit.

For example, if you make $10,000 in total net profits during a payout cycle under a 40% consistency rule, your single best day cannot exceed $4,000. If you caught a violent Gold (XAUUSD) or Nasdaq breakout on CPI day that earned $5,500, your payout will be temporarily frozen until you trade more sessions.

The Dilution Formula

How to Mathematically Dilute an Outsized Winning Day

Required Total Profit = Best Day Profit / (Consistency Cap / 100)

Suppose you trade with a 40% consistency firm. On Wednesday, you made $3,000. Across all days combined, your total profit is $5,000.

  • Your current concentration: $3,000 / $5,000 = 60% (Failed!)
  • Target total profit: $3,000 / 0.40 = $7,500
  • Additional profit needed: $7,500 - $5,000 = $2,500

By taking smaller, low-risk positions over the next 3 to 5 trading days to accumulate that $2,500, your best day naturally drops to 40% of the enlarged $7,500 pool, instantly qualifying you for full withdrawal.
